Children and Adolescents

About Therapy for Children

Psychotherapy may involve a combination of family, parent/caregiver, and individual child sessions.

Therapy with children often involves some sessions with parent(s)/caregiver(s) on their own, without the child present.  Meeting with parents helps to develop clear treatment plans for children.  These sessions also help to establish and maintain a foundation, or therapeutic container, that supports the therapeutic work with your child.

Therapy with children and youth can help to resolve barriers that undermine their ability to flourish and hinder their social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioural functioning.

Therapy for children and youth can help

  • Restore your child’s sense of safety after stressful, overwhelming, and traumatic experiences
  • Build your child’s positive sense of self
  • Promote your child’s felt-sense of competence
  • Strengthen your child’s experience of agency – of having control over their lives and actions
  • Support your child’s capacity to experience a range of emotions
  • Build your child’s social skills
  • Support your child’s ability to learn
  • Strengthen your child’s problem-solving skills
  • Support your child’s ability to make thoughtful decisions
  • Support your child’s experience of living from a place of authentic self-expression and creativity
