More About My Practice

More About Me:

Michelle Dick, Dip.C.S., C.Psych.Assoc.

My therapy approach integrates evidence-based methods for work with children and adults whose lives are affected by trauma and loss,  anxiety, early childhood attachment disturbances, emotional injuries, mental health difficulties, and learning disabilities.  My practice extends to children, adolescents, adults, and families.

I have a background in psychological and somatic approaches to psychotherapy.  My work is grounded in attachment theory and is informed by a range of therapy models that I have been fortunate to study and learn over my years of practice.  Somatic approaches are body-centered in that they are guided by understandings of body and nervous system physiology.  This involves an appreciation of the physiology of threat and of safety.  In therapy it is possible to work with body, brain, and mind.  Working through a somatic lens in therapy can expand possibilities for shifting out of patterns that developed to cope with living through traumatic and stressful experiences, and into more presence, life flow, and aliveness.

I enjoy and value ongoing learning and growth.  Some of the professional training courses that I have completed include:  Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner Certificate, Somatic Experiencing® International;  Infant Mental Health Certificate, Infant Mental Health Promotion and the Hospital for Sick Children;  Narrative Therapy Training Program, Hincks-Dellcrest, Karen Young;  Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, Dr. Daniel Hughes;  Intergenerational Trauma Treatment Model, Valerie Coping;  Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Certificate Program, Hincks-Dellcrest & OSIE-University of Toronto.

I completed my academic training in psychology at the University of Waterloo, and the Institute of Child Study, University of Toronto.  After graduation I completed five years of supervised practice in clinical psychology and registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario as a Psychological Associate with a practice in clinical and counselling psychology.

Fragrance Free Please:

I have personal experience with health difficulties and with the challenges and barriers that come with this.  Navigating health difficulties has cultivated in me a deep appreciation for the wisdom of the body.

In particular, I need to share with anyone who is interested in in-person sessions, that I have chemical sensitivities to several of the chemicals that are increasingly used in personal care products.  Fabric softeners and dryer sheets are particularly problematic.  Fragrances are difficult too.  For this reason, while it is a lot to request, I need to ask the people with whom I meet to come free from fabric softeners and dryer sheets, and to try to avoid fragranced products as much as possible.  Thank you!
